It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dave “Hebes” Hebestreit. Dave’s remarkable journey through life was marked by his passion for soccer, his dedication as an educator, and his love for coaching and mentoring others.
Dave’s soccer career began in Livonia, Michigan, where he played for Livonia United as a goalkeeper.
Over the course of 40+ years, his love for the game took him to 30 countries. His playing career spanned high school, college (Aquinas College), and the semi-professional league by the age of 23. Hebes’ commitment to the sport extended beyond playing, as he devoted much of his life to coaching at various levels—high school, club teams, college, and semi-professional.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Dave was a dedicated educator. He earned his Master’s Degree in English Language Arts and inspired countless students throughout his career. As a teacher, Hebes encouraged students to explore creative writing as a means of personal growth. In 2021, he was invited to join the Advisory Council of the National English Honor Society. For 25 years, Dave taught English Language Arts at Livonia Churchill High School, and for seven years, he also taught Composition at Madonna University.
Hebes’ legacy will live on through the many students, staff members, players, coaches, and organizations he impacted throughout his career. To honor his memory, we have created the “In Hebes We Trust” apparel. All proceeds from the sales will go to the family to help cover medical & memorial expenses. The logo was designed by a loyal friend during Dave’s time at Toledo Villa FC, and this flag proudly flew at many matches and in his classroom.
